The ideal of a beautiful woman was considered to be a tall, strong and stately woman with red cheeks, blue eyes and blonde hair. Such women were well-represented by the renowned Russian painter, Boris Mikhailovich Kustodiev. Such woman's beauty was also taken as a starting point for original matryoshka making. In provincial Russia before the revolution the name Matryona or Matriyosha was a very popular female name. It was derived from the Latin root 'mater' which means 'mother'. This name was associated with the image of a mother of a big family who was very healthy and had a portly figure. Subsequently, it became a symbolic name and was used specially to describe brightly painted wooden dolls made in such a way that they could be taken apart to reveal smaller dolls fitting inside on another. The first nesting dolls of Sergiev Posad portrayed this special beauty: young girls dressed in Russian sarafans carrying baskets, scythes, bunches of flowers or dressed in winter short fur coats and scarves.

The toy is made in a traditional style of the Bogorodskaya toy - hand cut from linden wood and hand assembled. Author: Oleg Isaev. Bogorodskaya toys are in many ways symbolic of Russia. In their majority, they depict bears (traditional Russian wild animal, if you want) at various tasks, pecking chicken and hares playing musical instruments. Bogorodskaya toys are excellent educational material for the little ones. Being very inexpensive - and yet, truly unique - they make wonderful affordable gifts. HISTORY: The history of Bogorodskaya toys starts from a legend. The story tells of a poor peasant family that lived in a small village Bogorodskoe (some 40 miles outside of Moscow; founded in the late 16th century) and had many kids. Their mother made a doll for them from cloth rags. But it lasted only a couple of days. The kids ripped it into pieces. So she wove one from straw. That one didnt last very long either. So the woman took a piece of wood and cut a wooden toy for them, which the children called Auka. They played with it for quite a long time, but eventually got bored with it and their father took it to a fair. At the fair he met a merchant that liked the toy and ordered several hundred of them from him. Since then, the story says, most villagers became toy makers.

Ironclad Roberto Clemente Nesting Doll
This nesting doll is a fun way for adults and kids alike to show their respect for the late Pirate. Each time one layer is opened, another is revealed! Fun for all ages! Roberto Clemente used power and speed in an elegant manner to forge a Hall of Fame career in the city of Pittsburgh. Clemente became a Pirate during the 1954 player draft when the Brooklyn Dodgers left him unprotected after the season, his first as a professional. For the next 18 years Clemente starred in the Pirate outfield. He won four National League batting crowns and batted .317 in his career, with exactly 3,000 hits, 240 home runs and 1,305 RBI. He also won 12 Gold Glove Awards, his powerful right arm is legendary. Clemente died on December 31, 1972 when a plane carrying him and four others with supplies for earthquake-stricken Nicaragua crashed. The Pirates retired his number 21 in 1973, the same year he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.
